PSU SWU is the collective union of all student employees
at Portland State University. To form a union, more than 30% of student workers must submit this form to show that they support the
democratic process of voting for union representation. If between 30 and 50%
sign to show their support, we will have an election. If more than 50% sign, our
union is automatically recognized and we can elect a team of student
workers to bargain with the university for a contract that covers wages,
benefits and working conditions.
Bargaining a first contract has several steps:
- PSU student employees elect a bargaining team made up of our peers;
- The bargaining team conducts surveys to find out waht student employees want our contract to address;
- Based on surveys, the bargaining team drafts
initial bargaining proposals and seeks democratic approval from student employees;
- PSU student employees participate with the bargaining team in the campaign to win a fair contrat;
- PSU student employees decide what to
bargain for and what the terms of the contract are, including dues and
fees as well as salaries, workplace rights, and benefits;
- Once a tentative agreement has been
negotiated, all PSU student employees can vote to approve
or reject it to decide if it goes into effect (or if the
bargaining team must continue to bargain a better contract).
No one will be asked to pay any dues or fees until the contract has been approved by a vote of PSU
Student Employees. In SEIU Local 503, dues would be around $9 for every $500 you earn (in exact terms,
1.7% of pay + $2.75/month). Student workers around the U.S. have won raises of $3-5 per hour or
more in their first contracts. Dues are one of the ways we form a strong union with resources
